About the Sessions

The Maker Mindset: Establishing the Plan
The goal of this session is to develop a deep understanding of the fundamental goals of the maker movement and highlight its relevance in the curriculum, showing teachers how to identify opportunities for embedding making in their curriculum and THEN identify products and resources that can help them achieve that goal.

An Integrated Approach to Making: Intentional Curricular Connections for Elementary and/or Secondary Teachers
In this session, we will collectively identify core curricular goals and determine ways to integrate making in the context of those goals. Once the curricular and maker goals are identified and aligned, teachers can more effectively select products and resources to meet those goals.

In this workshop, up to 65 participants will explore the challenges students face when struggling to comprehend and consider how students can use their strengths to grow in their areas of need. To accelerate students’ achievement in reading, literacy educators must ensure that struggling/striving readers are reading at least as much as their higher-achieving peers (Allington, 2006). As students get older, the strategies educators use must be steeped in adolescent engagement research. Critical to the success of any literacy intervention program is giving students opportunities for choice, and time to focus on collaboration, meaning, self-efficacy, and relationships (Guthrie, 2006 and Ivey, 2009). A collaborative, active, minds-on session will give participants an opportunity to generate practical application for principles outlined by the body of science guiding instruction for adolescents.
